Elba Island hollidays on a farm: La Chiusa in Portoferraio

 

'La Chiusa' is situated in the gulf of Portoferraio, directly on the sea, completely surrounded and closed in by a large and high stone wall. The name 'La Chiusa' - the enclosed- comes from this fact.
The farm was build in the 17th. century as witnesses the oldest building with its cellar and private chapel.

The apartments are situated in the different renovated farm houses, they are all near to the sea and have a small garden. The rental period goes from Saturday to Saturday (minimum 1 week)

SCIROCCO
Includes bedroom, living room w/ sofabed, kitchen and bathroom. Located directly on the shore and has small backyard garden. Good for 4 persons.

MAESTRALE
Includes bedroom, living room w/ sofabed, kitchen and bathroom. Has small garden w/ veranda and is 10 metres from shore. Good for 4 persons

A spacious bed-sitter for 2-4 persons w/ kitchen, bathroom and loft that includes king-sized bed. Located 100 metres from shore.

The actual wine cellar, dated end 17th. century was errected by an architect who afterwards did build the main hause on top of it and which can be reached over a large double staircase. Napoleon Bonaparte was twice guest at 'La Chuisa', when he first came to Elba and was waiting to be recieved with the due honors by the city of Portoferraio and a second time after a haunting outing on the nearby 'Monte Fabrello'. In the year 1815 the ministers of the 'Santa Alleanza', who had the duty to restitute the grand duchy of Tuscany to the Lorena family, also stayed at 'La Chiusa'.

There are eight hectares of vineyard, densly planted in order to obtain less grapes but a higher quality of wine (around 70 quintals per hectare).
For the same reason, during spring, grapes are cut (when there are too many) and during the harvest the grapes are carefully selected.

The produced wines are table wines and 'meditation' wines.

Elba White - Elba Red - Elba Rosé - all D.O.C. - obtained for the first from Trebbiano Toscano grapes and Sangioveto for the other two, are table wines.

Aleatico and Ansonica, sweet wines, obtained from the equally named grapes, are 'meditation' wines, appreciated before or after a meal. 'La Chiusa' produces even 'extra' olive oil; the olives are particularly taken care of and the product is of highest quality as one can read in various italian and foreign publications.

The wine and olives are grown with love and hard labour, by using anciant growing methods and modern cultivation technologies.
